Laura Recommends - Shawn Mendes - In My Blood

Published on

It's ironic that Shawn Mendes rose to fame thanks to his covers of hit songs on Vine, and I fell in love with his music thanks to a cover of one of his biggest hits 'Stitches'. Ward Thomas put a country twist on the track as part of their YouTube Snug Sessions back in 2016 and I instantly loved the song and went and listened to a few original releases from Shawn and was totally hooked on his music from there on.

The maturity in his writing is astounding and the fact he can play a variety of musical instruments, mixed with his slightly gravel vocal tone make him one of the best musicians of our generation.

I do think critics slightly over look Shawn Mendes' incredible talent because of how good looking he is and seem to pigeon hole him as just another teen pin-up, when in fact he is on musical par with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Adele.

His new single 'In My Blood' highlights all his talents from producing to writing. It's a really fantastic pop/rock track that has all the Mendes elements I love but there is a new rawness and vulnerability to his music that we haven't heard before.

The new single touches on subjects such as anxiety and depression and Shawn bravely opens up about his own struggles in the poignant lyrics. It's definitely my favourite song he has ever released. It strikes a chord with me personally and the line about sometimes feeling like giving up is particularly relevant as we all face different struggles every day.

I also love his other new release 'Lost In Japan', but for me 'In My Blood' elevates Mendes to a whole new level and showcases his incredible songwriting talents to the world.

So if you're looking for some powerful new music to listen to this week look no further than Shawn Mendes' 'In My Blood'. You will not be disappointed.
